Last week we spoke with Rob Hodgetts from Superyacht Investor around the idea of whether AI would change the face of superyacht surveys, or whether a cup of tea and a chocolate Hobnob always be a key part of the survey process (for the record, I’m a fan of chocolate Hobnobs!).
Rob’s article raises some interesting points. It’s important to remember that superyacht surveying is a highly differentiated market. When we step onboard a €100 million plus superyacht to undertake a pre purchase survey, there’s no baseline and we have a very short period of time in which to find out what we need to know. Similarly, when we step onboard a yacht to investigate and support a major insurance claim, there’s usually no baseline and we’re gathering information from scratch to build a picture of what has happened. The lack of baseline combined with the ‘soft diplomacy’ nature of what we do in these instances probably makes opportunities for application of AI quite limited. By comparison, a Class surveyor will be returning to a yacht regularly throughout her life, with a repetitive cyclical inspection pattern. I can really see a role for AI in their work. Val, I look forward to debating this topic with you at the Superyacht Investor conference in May.
